Top 5 Kosher Restaurants in Mexico City

Updated: Jul 11, 2021

My husband and I spent three weeks eating our way through Mexico City. I made eating out a priority because there isn't much information online regarding Mexico City's kosher scene. While I posted all the restaurants in a different article, (about 20-30 of them) I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight my Top 5. I'll show you where to eat and what to order!

*Note: Ordering steak in Mexico City is not recommended, I found the meat to be mediocre. A lot of it is imported and not so fresh. There are places where the meat is good but take my recommendations for the best dishes.

1. Auguri Trattoria

I put this at the top of the list for innovative dishes and excellent service. They have 3 menus, an Italian one, a burger house and a Chinese menu named Bamboo cuisine. You want to order off the the Bamboo menu. Please trust me on this one.

What to order:

A cocktail for sure - they are beautifully presented and are super tasty. They make the drinks right in front of you with a bar cart.

The chicken dynamite - it was creamy, crispy and tender all at the same time. It's magic!

The rice with coconut - Rice shouldn't be this good, it looks simple but omg it was so tasty!

The chicken with orange peels - this was innovative and a nice surprise for my palate.

The Lo Mein - good and tasty!

The artichokes - if you like artichokes they serve the hearts in a yummy sauce.

2. Tamar | Cocina de Jerusalem

I put this as a top 5 for delicious dishes, cool ambience and excellent value! This Israeli style restaurant features dishes of Middle Eastern cuisine. Some of the recipes are from the owners grandmother and everything was super tasty. We ordered SO much food and our whole bill was $63.

What to order:

Yemenite Soup - tastes like you just came home.

Lajmajin - this is for sure the best thing on the menu, it's like meat pizza and it's the owners grndmothers recipe.

Kippe - some call it Kibbeh

Moroccan Cigars - we got it with spinach and it was great.

3. Pan Y Canela

I put this in the Top 5 for its incredible setup and good dishes. The restaurant is on a terrace in a JCC and it's absolutely beautiful. They also have really good service.

What to order:

Bread and Butter - I know how basic, but they make it in house and it's delicious! The bread also has cream cheese inside, so yum.

Fried Olives - it was my first time trying this and it was a hit. They serve it with olive dip and the fried olives are stuffed with cheese.

Beet Carpaccio - usually made with beef but this creative beet rendition is served with arugula and goat cheese.

4. Dogs Bar

I put this in the Top 5 for great vibes and tasty comfort food. It's a sports bar and it's a really good place to spend a Motzei Shabbat. They have hookah too but make sure to sit at at table where hookah is allowed - there is a partition.

What to order:

Beef Carpaccio - so tasty, just get it.

A burger - classic and good

Margharitas! - no explanation necessary.

5. Quesadillas Ascension

I put this in the Top 5 simply because it's a MUST. It's a hole in the wall and not pretty at all but the food is very tasty and I'm sure you'll be able to try something new. It's also incredibly cheap and you can get a lot for just $10 USD. Bring cash, they don't take card here.

Quesadillas - they are stuffed with cheese and there a few options - the best ones were the ones mushroom or beans.

Tamales - Cooked with a corn husk or banana leaf, it's definitely an experience. The inside varies.

Plantains - They look like bananas but it's not, drizzled with caramel and cinnamon, this makes an excellent dessert.
