I went on a road trip in Arizona and stopped in Phoenix to check out the community. Naturally, I checked out the Kosher scene too! I didn't have time to make it to all of them, but here's where we went.
Cafe Chenar - Bukharian / Uzbek cuisine
1601 E Bell Rd ste a-11, Phoenix, AZ 85022
It was my first time eating Bukharian food and I really enjoyed the experience!
The plating was beautiful which always adds to it for me.
Here's what we ordered:
~ Crispy Chuchvara
I have no idea how to pronounce this dish but it's a deep fried potato Palmeni (dumpling). It's my favorite item at this place! The texture is crispy when you bite, with really good flavor and then a soft meaty middle. You dip it in the salsa and it’s the perfect addictive combo!
Here's what the inside looks like -
~ Uzbek Plav
It's a plate of rice mixed with meat, carrots and peas. It's simple, homey and tasty.
~ Manti
Another type of steamed dumpling with with a home blend seasoned meat.
So if you find yourself in Phoenix and you're feeling a little adventurous, try this place out!
Next up, Phoenix's two Kosher pizza spots.
La Bella - Pizzaria
6505 N 7th St, Phoenix, AZ 85014
I'm going to compare this place with Manhattan Pizza & Subs. They are both Kosher pizza places in Phoenix but they are very different from each other. La Bella is more of a "sit down" spot with more of a crowd. When we want there was a lot of Yeshiva bochurim and the place was buzzing with energy. They have more than pizza on their menu which is what makes it stands out from Manhattan Pizza & Subs.
Here's what we ordered:
Ravioli
I must say it tasted really fresh, I wonder if they make it on location. It was great.
A Chocolate Milkshake
It was pretty standard.
A Slice of Pizza
Okay so here's the deal. The sauce was mediocre, it had too much black pepper and the slice was very thin.
So while this place has a good variety of food, I don't recommend their pizza.
Which takes me to the next place, Manhattan Pizza & Subs...
Manhattan Pizza & Subs
5224 N 7th St, Phoenix, AZ 85014
While this place is tiny, poorly decorated, with 0 energy, they have phenomenal pizza!
I don't know what they do to make it so tasty but I really enjoyed the slices from here.
It's better to take it to go.
